August Werner Schellenberg (born July 25, 1936 – died August 15, 2013) was a talented Canadian actor. He was well-known for playing Randolph in the popular Free Willy movies, which were about a boy and a whale. He also appeared in many other films and TV shows, like Black Robe and The New World. During his career, August Schellenberg won several awards for his acting.
Life and Career
August Schellenberg was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He lived there until 1967, when he moved to Toronto, Ontario. He had a mixed background, with English, Mohawk, and Swiss-German roots. He trained to be an actor at the National Theatre School of Canada from 1963 to 1966.
He started his film career in 1971 with the movie Rip-Off. In 1981, he lent his voice to the animated film Heavy Metal. The 1990s were a busy time for him. He had important roles in Black Robe as Chomina, and in the Free Willy movies as Randolph Johnson. He also played Ned Dodd in Iron Will and Khonanesta in True Heart. He even played Sitting Bull in the TV film Crazy Horse.
Later, in 2005, he starred as Chief Powhatan in the movie The New World. He also appeared in Disney's Eight Below and The Green Chain. In 2011, he was in two episodes of the TV series Stargate Universe.
One of his favorite roles was playing Sitting Bull in Crazy Horse. He played this character again in the film Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, which earned him an Emmy nomination. He also played Pete Chasing Horse in Dreamkeeper (2003).
August Schellenberg was nominated for three Genie Awards and won one for his role in Black Robe. He was also nominated for two Gemini Awards and won one for the TV movie The Prodigal.
In 2012, he played the main character in a special all-Indigenous production of William Shakespeare's play King Lear. This play was performed at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa.
Besides acting, Schellenberg also taught acting classes at the Centre for Indigenous Theatre and York University in Toronto. He also led inspiring workshops for schools and community groups across North America.
Death
August Schellenberg passed away on August 15, 2013, in Dallas, Texas. He had been battling lung cancer for a long time. He was buried at Sparkman-Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery.
