Free and Equal (in Spanish, Libres e Iguales) is a group in Spain. It was started to speak out against nationalism in Catalonia. This group wants to protect democratic ideas. They also want to bring people together against Catalonia becoming independent. They aim to show why nationalism is not good.
The name 'Free and Equal' comes from important documents. It refers to the first rule in the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. This rule says that "People are born free and equal in their rights." It also connects to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This declaration states that "All humans are born free and equal." These ideas are about everyone having the same rights and being treated fairly.
Starting the Movement
Free and Equal started on July 15, 2014. It was launched outside the main parliament building in Spain. The group wanted to support the Spanish Constitution of 1978. They also wanted to keep Spain united. They hoped that big political parties would work together. This was to stop any parts of Spain from trying to break away.
After the Elections
After the local and regional elections in 2015, the group made a new call. They asked major political parties like PP, PSOE, UPyD, and C's to work together. Their goal was to stop "populism" from harming Spain's democracy. They wanted to protect the country's important rules and systems.
