Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A free good in economics is something that is naturally available in huge amounts. It doesn't need to be produced, and there's enough for everyone to have as much as they want. This means it's not scarce and costs nothing to society to provide.

Sometimes, a shop might give away items for free as a promotion. But these items are not "free goods" in the economic sense. That's because resources were used to make them. A true free good doesn't require any resources to be produced.

Types of Free Goods

There are a few different kinds of free goods:

Abundant Natural Resources

Some resources are so common in nature that there's more than enough for everyone. A great example of this is the air we breathe. We don't have to pay for it, and there's plenty for everyone.

Jointly Produced Resources

These free goods are often made as a side product of something else that is more valuable. For instance, waste products from factories or homes, like old packaging, can sometimes be considered free goods. They are produced without extra effort when something else is being made.

Ideas and Digital Creations

This type includes ideas, inventions, computer programs, or web pages that can be copied very easily and cheaply. Once an idea or a digital item is created, many people can use or copy it without it running out. For example, if someone invents a new device, the idea itself can be shared without it being used up.

Intellectual Property Laws

Even though ideas and digital creations can be copied easily, they often needed special skills, like artistic talent, to be made in the first place. To make sure people are still interested in creating new things, laws like copyrights and patents exist. These are called intellectual property laws. They give special rights to the creators, making their creations "scarce" by law, even if they could be copied for free. This encourages people to keep inventing and creating.

Future of Free Goods

Some people who study the future, called futurists, believe that very advanced nanotechnology could make almost everything a free good. Nanotechnology would allow us to turn any material into any other material of the same weight. If this happens, all raw materials and manufacturing time could become perfectly interchangeable. This would mean that most goods could become essentially free goods, as they would be easy to create from common materials.
