Freebird Live (originally called Freebird Cafe) was a popular music venue in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. It was a place where many bands played live music for fans. The venue closed its doors for good with a final concert on January 21, 2016.
About Freebird Live
This music spot first opened on September 8, 1999. The very first concert featured The Charlie Daniels Band. When it was called Freebird Cafe, it had cool items from the famous band Lynyrd Skynyrd. It also served food and played recorded music.
In 2005, the owners thought about moving Freebird Live. They wanted a bigger place to fit more people and host even bigger bands. They looked at buildings in Atlantic Beach, Florida and Jacksonville, Florida. But in the end, they decided to make the current building better instead of moving.
Bands That Played There
Many bands from Florida played at Freebird Live. Some popular bands from Jacksonville included Yellowcard in 2002 and Shinedown in 2003. Red Jumpsuit Apparatus played in 2004, and Cold performed in 2010.
Other well-known Florida bands also rocked the stage. Sister Hazel from Gainesville played in 2008. Less Than Jake visited in 2005, and Against Me! played in 2007. From Orlando, Trivium performed in 2009. Mayday Parade played in 2011, and New Found Glory was there in 2010.
Freebird Live's final show was on January 20, 2016. The band Galactic played that night. After Freebird Live closed, a new place called Surfer the Bar opened in the same building.
