History of Freefield Castle
Freefield Castle was built a very long time ago, possibly in the 12th or 13th century. This means it could be around 800 years old! The castle and the land around it were owned by a family called the Leith family.
Over time, there was a disagreement between the Leith family and another powerful family, the Leslie family from Pitcaple. This conflict caused problems between the two families for a while.
What Remains of Freefield Castle Today
Sadly, if you visit the area today, you won't find any parts of Freefield Castle. There are no traces left of the old building.
In 1754, a new building called Freefield House was built in its place. This new house was constructed about 50 meters (164 feet) away from where the castle once stood. Even though the castle is gone now, we know it existed because it was shown on a map made in 1654 by a mapmaker named Gordon of Straloch. This old map helps us imagine where the castle might have been.
