The Freeman and Jesse Thorp House and Cottages is a historic place located in Fish Creek, Wisconsin, United States. This special site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. This means it's officially recognized as an important part of the country's history.

The Thorp House: A Historic Home

This interesting house was built by Freeman Thorp. He was the nephew of Asa Thorp, who helped start the town of Fish Creek. The house has seen many changes over the years.

From Family Home to Bed and Breakfast

After Freeman Thorp passed away, his wife, Jesse, needed a way to earn money. She decided to open their home to "lodgers." Lodgers were like guests who paid to stay in a room, similar to a small hotel.

The house continued to welcome guests for many years. However, it eventually closed its doors in the 1960s.

A New Beginning for the Thorp House

In 1986, the house got a fresh start! It was carefully fixed up and reopened as a bed and breakfast. A bed and breakfast is a place where travelers can stay overnight and enjoy a morning meal.

A famous author named LaVyrle Spencer even stayed there during its reopening week. She was so inspired by her visit that she wrote her best-selling novel, Bitter Sweet. This book is about an innkeeper in Door County, Wisconsin, and the Thorp House helped her imagine the story.
