The Fremantle Traffic Bridge is an important bridge in Perth, Western Australia. It helps cars and trucks cross the Swan River. This bridge connects the areas of North Fremantle and Fremantle. It carries a road called Queen Victoria Street.
Building the Bridge
Before this bridge, there was an older one built in 1866. That old bridge needed to be replaced badly. So, work on the new Fremantle Traffic Bridge started in November 1937.
Engineers thought the new bridge would only be used for a short time. This was because they expected Fremantle Harbour to expand further east. Because of this, the bridge was built using timber instead of stronger concrete. The Fremantle Traffic Bridge officially opened on 15 December 1939.
Future Plans
A brand new bridge is planned to replace the current one. Construction for this new bridge was scheduled to begin in late 2021.
