|} The Navarin was a large ship of the line built for the French Navy. It was part of the Hercule-class, which were powerful warships. Originally, it was designed to use only sails, but it was later updated to also use a steam engine. This made it a "Sail and Steam" ship, combining old and new technology.
Building a Mighty Ship
The Navarin was built in Toulon, France. Its construction began in May 1832. It took a long time to build such a large ship. Finally, it was launched into the water on July 26, 1854.
This ship was very big, weighing 4440 tonnes. It was about 62.5 meters long and 16.2 meters wide. It needed a huge crew of 955 sailors to operate it. The Navarin was armed with 100 guns. These included many powerful 30-pounder guns and some smaller 18-pounder guns. Its strong timber hull acted as its armor.
The Navarin had an interesting career. Its first important job was during the Crimean War. It was used as a troopship, which means it carried soldiers to different places.
After its time as a troopship, the Navarin got a new role. In 1862, it became a schoolship. This meant it was used to train new sailors. They would learn how to sail and operate a large warship.
Later Years and New Jobs
In 1873, the Navarin's steam engine was taken out. It went back to being a pure sailing ship. At this point, it was used to transport people to New Caledonia. New Caledonia is a group of islands far away in the Pacific Ocean.
The Navarin served for many years. In 1887, it became a hulk in Brest. A hulk is an old ship that is no longer used for active service. It might be used as a storage vessel or for other purposes. The Navarin was finally taken apart, or "broken up," in 1908.
