A Look Back: Friday's History
The community of Friday started a long time ago. It was first known as Ellis Prairie. This name came from Benjamin Ellis, who received land there in 1839. People began settling in the area around the time of the American Civil War.
A post office opened in Friday in 1903. It served the community for many years before closing in 1955. In 1914, Friday was a busy little place. It had a general store, a machine called a cotton gin (used to separate cotton fibers), and a gristmill (which ground grain into flour).
By 1947, the store and post office were still there. About 50 people lived in Friday at that time. Mail for the community was then delivered from a nearby town called Groveton. By the 1990s, Friday still had a store, a community center, a cemetery, and several homes. The number of people living in Friday changed over the years. In 1990, there were 41 residents. By 2000, the population had grown to 99 people.
