Friedrich Achleitner (born May 23, 1930 – died March 27, 2019) was an Austrian writer and expert on buildings. He was known for his poems and for writing about architecture. He was part of a group called the Wiener Gruppe, where he created special kinds of poems. His most important work was a huge collection of books about 20th-century Austrian buildings. He visited every single building himself to write about it! Achleitner also taught about architecture at the University of Applied Arts Vienna.

Early Life and Education
Friedrich Achleitner was born in Schalchen, a town in Upper Austria. His father was a farmer. Friedrich went to school in Salzburg. Later, he studied architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1950 to 1953. His teacher was a famous architect named Clemens Holzmeister. After finishing his studies, he worked on building projects until 1958. One of these projects was helping to fix up the Rosenkranzkirche church in Vienna.
Writing and the Wiener Gruppe
In 1955, Achleitner joined a group of artists and writers called the Wiener Gruppe. This group included people like H. C. Artmann and Gerhard Rühm. They liked to experiment with words and art. Achleitner wrote poems using local dialect and created "concrete poems." Concrete poems are poems where the way the words look on the page is as important as their meaning. He also wrote an experimental book called quadratroman, which came out in 1973.
Becoming an Architecture Expert
Achleitner started writing about architecture for newspapers in Austria. From 1962 to 1972, he wrote for Die Presse. He helped people think about buildings in new and interesting ways. In 1961, he began teaching about how buildings are made at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Later, in 1983, he became a professor at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. He taught about the history and ideas behind architecture until 1998.
His Big Architecture Project
In 1965, Achleitner started his most famous work, a guide to Austrian architecture in the 20th century. This huge project was called Österreichische Architektur im 20. Jahrhundert. The first book in the series came out in 1980. The fifth book was published shortly after his 80th birthday. For this project, he personally visited and wrote about every building. Because of his detailed work, the book is often called Der Achleitner by experts. His notes and research are now kept at the Architekturzentrum Wien, an architecture center.
Awards and Later Life
Friedrich Achleitner received many awards for his work. One important award was the Schelling Architecture Theory Prize in 2008. He passed away in Vienna on March 27, 2019, when he was 88 years old.
