Upper Austria (which is Oberösterreich in German) is one of the nine special states in Austria. These states are also called Bundesländer. The most important city and capital of Upper Austria is Linz.
Upper Austria is a beautiful region known for its stunning natural landscapes. It has many mountains, lakes, and rivers. It is also an important area for Austria's economy and culture.

Exploring Upper Austria's Geography
Upper Austria shares its borders with two other countries: Germany and the Czech Republic. It also touches other Austrian states. These include Lower Austria, Styria, and Salzburg.
With an area of nearly 12,000 square kilometers, Upper Austria is the fourth largest state in Austria. It is home to about 1.45 million people, making it the third most populated state.
What Mountains Are in Upper Austria?
Upper Austria has several impressive mountain ranges. These mountains are part of the Alps. They offer amazing views and opportunities for outdoor activities.

- The Prealps: These are lower mountains like the Oberösterreichische Voralpen. They include the Sengsengebirge and Reichraminger Hintergebirge. You can also find the Salzkammergutberge here, with mountains like the Höllengebirge.

Discovering Upper Austria's Lakes
Many of Upper Austria's largest and most beautiful lakes are found in the southern part of the state. This area is known as the Salzkammergut. These lakes are popular for swimming, boating, and relaxing.
