Vorarlberg is the most western state in Austria. Its capital city is Bregenz. The biggest cities in Vorarlberg are Feldkirch and Dornbirn. In 2016, about 384,000 people lived there.

Unique Language and Culture

Vorarlberg is special because it's the only Austrian state where people don't speak Austro-Bavarian. Instead, they speak an Alemannic dialect. This language is more like what people speak in nearby Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Swabia in Germany. This makes Vorarlberg's culture a bit different from the rest of Austria.

Religion in Vorarlberg

Most people in Vorarlberg, about 78%, are Roman Catholic. The second largest group, about 8.4% of the population, follows Islam.

Geography and Nature

Vorarlberg has beautiful mountains and rivers. The highest mountain is Piz Buin. The main rivers flowing through the state are the Ill, the Bregenzer Ach, and the Dornbirner Ach.

Districts and Borders

Vorarlberg is divided into four main areas called districts. These are Bregenz, Dornbirn, Feldkirch, and Bludenz.

Neighboring Countries

Vorarlberg shares land borders with three countries:

Lake Constance is also a special border. Even though there are no land borders across the lake, all the countries sharing it (Austria, Germany, and Switzerland) have a common border there. This means Vorarlberg also borders the German state of Baden-Württemberg and the Swiss canton of Thurgau across the lake.
