Hans Carl Artmann (born June 12, 1921 – died December 4, 2000) was an Austrian poet and writer. He was also known by the name Ib Hansen. He became very well-known for his early poems written in the Viennese language, especially a collection called med ana schwoazzn dintn (1958). However, he explored many other types of writing throughout his career.

Life and Work

Artmann was born in Vienna, Austria. His father, Johann Artmann, was a shoemaker. H.C. Artmann grew up in Vienna and went to school there. After school, he worked as an office intern for three years. In 1940, he was called to serve in World War II. He was injured in 1941 and later transferred to a special military unit.

Artmann was interested in languages from a young age, as he grew up speaking three languages. His first writings were published in 1947 on the radio and in a newspaper. In 1951, he joined a group called the Art-Club. From 1952, he worked with other writers like Gerhard Rühm and Konrad Bayer. In the same year, he helped start the Wiener Gruppe, a group of avantgarde poets (meaning they tried new and experimental ways of writing). He left this group in 1958.

Starting in 1954, Artmann traveled a lot around Europe. He lived in Sweden from 1961 to 1965, staying in cities like Stockholm and Malmö. Then he moved to Berlin until 1969, and finally settled in Salzburg in 1972. As Ib Hansen, he even sang in a music contest in Denmark in 1966 with the song "Lille Veninde".

In 1973, he helped create the Anti P.E.N. club. Later that year, he became the president of the Grazer Autorenversammlung, a writers' association, and stayed in that role until 1978.

Artmann received many awards for his writing during his life. These included the Grand Austrian State Prize in 1974, an honorary doctor title from the University of Salzburg in 1991, and the Georg-Büchner Preis for literature in 1997.

He wrote many funny stories, including parodies (funny imitations) of famous characters like Dracula (in his book dracula dracula, 1966) and Frankenstein (in Frankenstein in Sussex, 1969). He also wrote stories that made fun of Hollywood fantasy films.

Artmann was also a very active translator. He translated works by authors like Edward Lear and H.P. Lovecraft into German. He even translated one of the Asterix comic books, Da Legionäa Asterix, into the Viennese language in 1999.

H. C. Artmann passed away from a heart attack in Vienna on December 4, 2000, at the age of 79. His ashes are buried at Feuerhalle Simmering.
