Friedrich Wilhelm Nikolaus Karl von Hohenzollern was a German emperor who ruled for only 99 days. He was born in Potsdam on October 18, 1831. His father was Wilhelm I, the first German Emperor. Friedrich III became emperor after his father died in 1888. Sadly, he was already very ill with throat cancer. He passed away on June 15, 1888, in Potsdam.
Who Was Friedrich III?
Friedrich Wilhelm Nikolaus Karl von Hohenzollern was the only son of Wilhelm I. He was born in the New Palace in Potsdam. When his father died on March 9, 1888, Friedrich Wilhelm became King of Prussia and German Emperor. He took the name Friedrich III.
His Family Life
On January 25, 1858, Friedrich married Princess Victoria of the United Kingdom. She was the oldest child of Queen Victoria and Albert the Prince Consort. Friedrich and Victoria had seven children together. Their oldest son, Friedrich Wilhelm, later became King and Emperor after his father.
His Short Reign
Friedrich III's time as emperor was very short. He suffered from throat cancer. Because of his illness, he could only rule for 99 days. His reign ended when he died on June 15, 1888. He is buried next to his wife. Their resting place is in the Mausoleum of the Friedenskirche in Sanssouci Park, Potsdam.
