Godefridus Adrianus Quirinus "Frits" Niessen (born 16 September 1936 – died 23 October 2020) was a Dutch politician. He was a member of the House of Representatives for the Labour Party. He served two terms, first from 1977 to 1978, and then from 1980 to 1994.

Frits Niessen: A Dutch Politician
Frits Niessen was an important figure in Dutch politics. He spent many years working for the people of the Netherlands. He was known for his dedication to cultural and educational matters.
Early Life and Education
Frits Niessen was born in Raamsdonk, Netherlands, on 16 September 1936. Before becoming a politician, he worked as a teacher. From 1958 to 1963, he taught at a primary school in Raamsdonksveer. Later, from 1963 to 1980, he taught Dutch at a high school in Dongen.
Joining the House of Representatives
Niessen first became a member of the House of Representatives on 6 October 1977. This is a very important part of the Dutch government, similar to a parliament. He represented the Labour Party. His first term ended on 6 January 1978.
He returned to the House of Representatives on 27 August 1980. He then served continuously until 17 May 1994. This shows his long commitment to public service.
Important Work in Parliament
During his time in parliament, Frits Niessen focused on several key areas. He was the Labour Party's spokesperson for interior affairs and cultural matters. He also worked on issues related to education.
In 1985, he spoke out about a decision regarding a famous Dutch award. He helped prevent the closing of the Institut Néerlandais in Paris in 1989. This institute is important for Dutch culture abroad.
Other Contributions and Honors
Besides his political work, Niessen was also involved in cultural activities. For many years, he was an editor for Ons Erfdeel, a magazine about Dutch language and culture. He became the deputy editor-in-chief in 1977 and stayed in that role until 2016.
He received the ANV-Visser Neerlandiaprijs in the 1990s. This award recognized his four decades of work for the Dutch language and culture. He also co-chaired a commission that worked on cultural agreements between Flanders (Belgium) and the Netherlands.
In 2006, he was made a Commander in the Order of the Crown. This is a special honor from the Netherlands. In 2009, he became an honorary citizen of Geertruidenberg. Frits Niessen passed away on 23 October 2020 in Raamsdonksveer.
