The Story of Fritz-Kola
How Two Students Created a Cola
Fritz-kola was started in 2003 by two friends, Lorenz Hampl and Mirco Wiegert, who were students in Hamburg, Germany. They wanted to create a new kind of cola. They worked with a brewery to develop their own special recipe. Their cola had less sugar and more caffeine than other popular colas like Coke or Pepsi. They also added a hint of lemon flavor.
To choose a name for their new drink, they asked people outside a shopping center for their ideas. To save money, they used simple black and white labels. The labels even had funny, edited pictures of their own faces as the logo!
Growing the Business
At first, Lorenz and Mirco sold their first cases of Fritz-kola to bars. They used a "returnable basis," which means the bars would return the empty bottles so they could be refilled. This helped them save money. For the first three years, they didn't even have a proper office!
Lorenz Hampl left the business in 2016. In 2020, Mirco Wiegert was still leading the company and owned most of it. The company had grown to employ 280 people. Fritz-kola is made in five different bottling plants. It is sold in many European countries. In 2019, their 330ml bottles were very popular, selling more than all other brands except Coke. Other big markets for Fritz-kola include the Netherlands, Poland, Belgium, and Austria.
