Frog Rock is a famous and fun landmark on Bainbridge Island, Washington. It's a huge rock that looks like a frog! People love to visit this unique spot, which has a cool story behind how it got its froggy look.

What is Frog Rock?

Frog Rock is a special type of rock called a glacial erratic. This means it's a large boulder that was moved by a glacier far from where it originally formed. Glaciers are like giant, slow-moving rivers of ice. As they move, they pick up rocks and carry them along. When the ice melts, these rocks are left behind, sometimes in places where they don't naturally belong.

The frog shape of Frog Rock is actually made of two large granite boulders stacked on top of each other. These rocks were painted to look like a frog by two local residents on June 6, 1971.

How Frog Rock Got Its Name

Before it became Frog Rock, the boulders had a different story. The two rocks were once part of a single, even larger boulder. In the 1950s or even earlier, this big rock was in the way of a road. To clear the path, people used dynamite to break it apart.

After the dynamite blast, the rock was known as "Split Rock." It wasn't until 1971 that it got its famous froggy makeover and became known as Frog Rock.

Frog Rock is very well-known and loved by people living on Bainbridge Island and visitors too. It's seen as a funny and historic marker that brings a smile to many faces. It's also a popular spot for people exploring the island.
