Froia facts for kids
Froia was a powerful nobleman from the Visigothic kingdom. He was likely a count, which was an important leader in a region. In the year 653 AD, Froia tried to take over the throne and become king. This happened either at the very end of King Chindasuinth's rule or right at the start of his son, King Reccesuinth's time as king.
Who Was Froia?
Froia was a Visigoth, a group of people who ruled a large part of what is now Spain and Portugal after the Roman Empire. As a nobleman, he had land and influence. He decided to challenge the current king and try to become the new ruler.
Froia's Rebellion Begins
Froia gathered support from the Basques, a group of people living in the mountains near the Ebro valley. He had a small but loyal group of followers who believed in his cause. With their help, Froia started his rebellion.
The Siege of Zaragoza
Froia and his supporters began to attack the important city of Zaragoza. Inside the city, Bishop Taius was busy working on updating the Lex Visigothorum, which was the Visigothic law book. Because of the siege, Bishop Taius could not leave the city.
The King's Response
King Reccesuinth quickly learned about Froia's rebellion. He personally led his army to stop the revolt. The king's forces were strong, and they managed to push the Basques back into their mountain homes. King Reccesuinth successfully put an end to Froia's attempt to seize the throne.
