Lake Frontier is a beautiful lake found entirely within the town of Lac-Frontière, Quebec. This town is located in the Montmagny area, which is like a group of local communities working together. It's all part of the Chaudière-Appalaches region in Quebec, Canada.
The small town of Lac-Frontière, south of the lake, started to grow a lot around 1915. This was because a railway line ended there, making it an important stop.
For a long time, in the 1800s and 1900s, cutting down trees and working with wood was the main way people made a living here. But once the railway arrived, more people started visiting. The area then became popular for fun activities and tourism.
Where is Lake Frontier Located?
Lake Frontier gets its water from two main sources. The Northwest Black River flows into it from the north. Another stream, called Creek Reservoir, feeds it from the west. The main village of Lac-Frontière, Quebec is situated just south of the lake.
The place where water flows out of Lake Frontier is on its southeast side. This spot is very close to some important landmarks:
- It's about 0.9 kilometres (0.56 mi) west of the border between Canada and the United States.
- It's only 0.5 kilometres (0.31 mi) north of the center of the Lac-Frontière village.
- It's about 1.9 kilometres (1.2 mi) east of the top of "Montagne du Lac" (Mountain of the Lake), which is 510 metres (1,670 ft) high.
- It's also 4.4 kilometres (2.7 mi) southeast from the village of Sainte-Lucie-de-Beauregard, Quebec.
What's in a Name? The Story of Lake Frontier
The name "Lake Frontier" was chosen because the lake is very close to the border with the United States. This border was officially set in 1842 by something called the Treaty of Webster-Ashburton. This treaty was signed after a lot of talks between the British and the Americans.
After the treaty, the British set up camps near the lake. These camps were for their surveyors, who were people who measured the land to figure out exactly where the border should be. At the same time, people from the Montmagny area started calling this lake "English Lake." They connected it to the language of the British and American people who were working there. Old maps from that time even show it as "English Lake."
The official name, "Lake Frontier," was finally made formal on December 5, 1968. This decision was made by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is the board in Quebec responsible for naming places.
