Fujiwara no Tadahira (藤原 忠平, 880 – September 9, 949) was an important Japanese statesman, courtier, and politician. He lived during the Heian period (794 to 1185), a time when emperors ruled Japan.

Tadahira was also known by other names like Teishin-Kō or Ko-ichijō Dono. These names showed his high status in the government. He played a big role in shaping the laws and government of his time.

Fujiwara no Tadahira's Career and Influence

Fujiwara no Tadahira was a kuge, which means he was a noble from a powerful family in Japan. He was known for his work in creating important legal documents.

Key Legal Works

Tadahira helped write and publish the Engishiki. This was a collection of rules and procedures for the Japanese government. It covered everything from ceremonies to how officials should act.

He was also a main editor for the Sandai-kyaku-shiki. This legal code was sometimes called the Rules and Regulations of the Three Generations. It helped organize laws from different emperors' reigns.

Serving as Regent

Tadahira served as a regent for Emperor Suzaku. A regent is someone who rules for an emperor who is too young or unable to govern. Emperor Suzaku ruled from 930 to 946.

  • September 17, 914: Tadahira was named udaijin, a high government position.
  • October 16, 930: He became sesshō, the regent for the young emperor.
  • September 7, 936: He took on the role of daijō-daijin, the highest government position.
  • February 16, 937: Tadahira led the special coming-of-age ceremony for Emperor Suzaku.
  • November 29, 941: He was appointed kampaku, another powerful regent role.

Fujiwara Family Connections

Fujiwara no Tadahira belonged to the powerful Fujiwara clan. This family had a lot of influence in the Japanese court for centuries.

Family Members

Tadahira was the son of Fujiwara no Mototsune, another important figure. His brothers were Fujiwara no Tokihira and Fujiwara no Nakahira. Interestingly, both Emperor Suzaku and Emperor Murakami were his nephews through his sisters.

Tadahira became the head of the Hokke branch of the Fujiwara clan in 909. This happened after his older brother, Tokihira, passed away.
