Fulk I of Anjou (born around 870 – died 942) was an important leader in France during the 900s. He was also known as Foulques le Roux, which means "Fulk the Red." He was the first person to hold the title of Count of Anjou. He started as a viscount, which is a type of local ruler, and gradually gained more power and land, becoming a count. He ruled the area of Anjou until he passed away in 942.
Fulk I's Life and Rule
Fulk I was born around the year 870. His parents were Ingelger of Anjou and Adelais of Amboise. He became the first official Count of Anjou, ruling this important region from about 908 until 942.
Fulk's power grew over time. In 899, he became the Viscount of Tours. A viscount was a ruler who managed a specific area for a higher lord. By 905, he was known as the Count of Tours. Around 910, he also became the Count of Nantes. He worked hard to make his territory larger, especially around Angers. By 929, he officially claimed the title of Count of Anjou.
During his time as a leader, Fulk I often had to fight to protect and expand his lands. He was frequently at war with the Normans and the Bretons, who were other powerful groups in the region. For example, he took control of the county of Nantes in 907. However, he had to give it back to the Bretons in 919. Fulk I died around the year 942.
Fulk I's Family
Fulk I married a woman named Roscille de Loches. Her father was Warnerius, who was a lord of several areas like Loches and Villentrois. Fulk and Roscille had two known children:
- Guy (also known as Wido), who became a Bishop of Soissons. He passed away in 970.
- Fulk II, who took over as Count of Anjou after his father's death.
