The Fuller-Weston House is a special old house located at 11 Summer Street in Augusta, Maine. It was built way back in 1818. This house is a great example of a building style called Federal architecture. It is also famous because several important people lived here, including Melville Fuller, who became the Chief Justice of the United States. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Today, it serves as the rectory (a home for a priest) for St. Mark's Church.
The Fuller-Weston House: A Historic Home
The Fuller-Weston House stands on the east side of Summer Street. This street is mostly filled with homes and is just north of the city's main downtown area. The house faces south.
What Does This Historic House Look Like?
The house is a two-story building made of wood. It has a special kind of roof called a hip roof, which slopes down on all four sides. The outside walls are covered with clapboard siding, and its base is made of strong granite.
The front of the house has five sections, with the main entrance in the middle. The front door has narrow windows on the sides and decorative columns next to it. Above the door, there is a Federal style fan-shaped design with slats. A flat roof covers the entrance, supported by square posts, making a welcoming porch.
Who Lived in the Fuller-Weston House?
The Fuller-Weston House was built in 1818 for a lawyer named Henry Weld Fuller. He bought a very large piece of land, about 100 acres, which included much of central Augusta.
In 1827, Henry Fuller sold the house to Nathan Weston. Nathan Weston had just been chosen to be a judge on the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. He later became the chief judge of that court in 1834.
Nathan Weston's daughter married Henry Fuller's son. Their child was Melville Fuller. Melville Fuller grew up to be a very important person. He served as the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1888 to 1910. This means he was the head judge of the highest court in the United States!
