History of Fulton
Fulton got its name from Fulton County. The town began to grow in the mid-1800s.
Early Days in Fulton
The first post office in Fulton opened in 1843. A few years later, in 1850, the very first log cabin was built. Robert Aitken and his family were the first people to live in it. They also ran a saw mill in the town.
In 1851, Judge Wright helped plan the roads and markers for the village. The first schoolhouse was built in 1845. Later, in 1909, a new brick school was constructed.
Community Growth
Churches also started early in Fulton. The Methodists built their first church in 1852. The Baptists also formed a church in 1853.
Robert Aitken, who was one of the first settlers, became the first postmaster in 1851. Many businesses started to open. These included places to tan leather, a blacksmith shop, and a grist mill for grinding grain. There was also a carpet weaver and an inn, which later became a hotel.
Fulton welcomed its first doctor, Franklin C. Dielman, after he finished medical school. The town's first bank opened in 1907. The first newspaper, called "The Fulton Leader," started in 1901.
Modern Improvements
A library was set up in 1920. It became part of the Fulton County Library system in 1921. In the summer of 1916, Fulton got its first street lights. This helped make the town brighter and safer at night.
