The Fulton House is a very old and important stone building in McConnellsburg, Pennsylvania. It was built around 1793 and used to be a famous hotel called The Union Hotel. Many important people, including governors and even four United States presidents, stayed there!

This historic building has a special style called Georgian-influenced architecture. It was badly damaged by a fire in 1944, but it has been carefully restored. Luckily, an addition built in 1820 was not harmed by the fire.

What is the Fulton House?

The Fulton House started as an inn or "tavern" around 1793. Back then, inns were like hotels for travelers. People would stop there to rest, eat, and stable their horses during long journeys. It was a busy place on Lincoln Way East, a main road.

A Home for Important Guests

Imagine staying in a place where presidents once slept! The Fulton House was known for hosting many important leaders. This shows how significant the building was in its early days. It was a popular stop for people traveling through Pennsylvania.

A Building with History

The Fulton House has seen a lot of history unfold. It has stood for over 200 years, witnessing many changes in the area.

The Big Fire of 1944

In 1944, a big fire caused a lot of damage to the Fulton House. Much of the inside of the original building from the 1700s was destroyed. However, the part of the building added in 1820 was safe. After the fire, the house was carefully restored to bring back its historic look.

Becoming a Historic Place

Because of its long history and importance, the Fulton House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. This is a special list of buildings, sites, and objects that are important to American history. Being on this list helps protect the building for future generations. The Fulton House is also part of the larger McConnellsburg Historic District. This means it's one of many old buildings in the town that together tell a story about the past.

Visiting the Fulton House Today

Today, the east side of the Fulton House is home to the Fulton County Historical Society Museum. This museum helps people learn about the history of Fulton County. It is open to the public on special occasions, so you might get a chance to visit and see this amazing historic building for yourself!
