A Glimpse into History: The Fulton Log House
Who Built This Historic Log House?
The story of the Fulton Log House begins with Alexander Gilfillan. He was an early settler who came to Upper St. Clair Township in the late 1760s. Over time, he became the owner of a very large property, about 413 acres.
Around 1830, Alexander or his son, John, decided to build homes for their workers. They constructed several log houses on their land. However, only one of these original log houses has survived to this day. This special house remained with the Gilfillan family for many years, until 1899.
The Fulton Family and a Future Congressman
In 1923, James E. and Emily Fulton purchased the log house. They used it as a summer home, a place to relax during warmer months. Their son, James Grove Fulton, grew up to be a very important person. He was a lifelong bachelor, meaning he never married.
James Grove Fulton served in the United States Congress from 1945 to 1971. This means he was a politician who helped make laws for the country. After he passed away, his estate sold the house to Upper St. Clair Township in 1972.
Restoring and Using the Log House Today
After the township bought the house, a group called the 1830 Log House Association stepped in. They worked hard to restore the old house, bringing it back to its original condition. Today, the Fulton Log House is used for educational purposes. It helps people, especially students, learn about what life was like in the past. It's a living piece of history that teaches us about early settlers and how people lived nearly 200 years ago.
