The Fulvous Forest Skimmer, also known by its scientific name Neurothemis fulvia, is a beautiful dragonfly. You can find these amazing insects flying around in many parts of Asia.

What Does It Look Like?

The Fulvous Forest Skimmer is a medium-sized dragonfly. It has a rusty color and cool transparent tips on its wings.

Male Dragonflies

Male Fulvous Forest Skimmers have a reddish-brown face. Their eyes are dark reddish-brown on top and golden-brown underneath. Their body, including the chest (thorax), belly (abdomen), and legs, is also reddish-brown.

Their wings are a dark reddish-brown. Each wing has a clear, see-through area near the tip that looks like a triangle. The spots on their wings are also dark reddish-brown.

Female Dragonflies

Female Fulvous Forest Skimmers can look quite different from the males, and even from each other! Their head, chest, and belly are usually a lighter rusty-brown color.

Their wings are a clear, amber-yellow. They often have a dark line that goes all the way to the tip of their front wings. Like the males, many females also have a clear, triangular area at the very end of their wings.

The size, shape, and color of their wings can vary a lot among females. The clear, uncolored tips of their wings help tell them apart from other red dragonflies in Asia.

Where Do They Live?

The Fulvous Forest Skimmer loves wet forests. You can often spot them resting on fallen logs or small bushes.

They like to gather in large groups where the forest canopy opens up, or along the edges of forests. These dragonflies also breed in wet areas like marshes near forest streams, or in ponds. Sometimes, you might even find them in local parks and gardens!
