The story of G begins with the Greek alphabet. The Greeks had a letter called gamma (Γ). This letter made a sound like the 'g' in "go." The ancient Etruscan language then borrowed this letter. They used a rounded shape, similar to our 'C'.
Over time, the letter 'C' in Latin started to make a different sound. It began to sound like the 'k' in "cat." This meant there was no clear letter for the 'g' sound anymore.
Around 230 BCE, a Roman teacher named Spurius Carvilius Ruga decided to fix this. He added a small line to the letter 'C' to create a new letter: 'G'. This new 'G' was specifically for the 'g' sound, like in "game." He was the first Roman to open a school where students paid to learn.
Some people believe that before 'G' was added, the letter 'Z' was removed from the Latin alphabet. This might have made space for the new 'G' to fit in the alphabet's order.
