The letter Z in cursive style.

Z is the twenty-sixth and final letter in the English alphabet. Both the capital letter Z and the small letter z are used as a consonant. This means that when you say 'Z', your breath is partly blocked. The letter Z is not used very often. In fact, it is the most rarely used letter in the English language. The same letter in the Greek alphabet is called zeta.

How to Say the Letter Z

The letter Z can be said in two main ways: zed or zee.

  • The name zed comes from the Greek letter zeta. This is how most people outside of North America say it, for example, in the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia.
  • The name zee is used in American English. This way of saying it became popular in the late 1600s in England and then spread to America.

Where Did Z Come From?

The letter Z has a long history, going back thousands of years to ancient writing systems.

Semitic Roots of Z

The very first form of Z came from a Semitic symbol called zayin. This symbol was the seventh letter in their alphabet. It might have meant "weapon" or "hoe". This ancient symbol helped create the Z we use today in English and French.

Greek Adaptation of Z

The ancient Greeks copied the zayin symbol from the Phoenician alphabet. They called it zeta. The Greek zeta looked very similar to the Phoenician symbol for a long time. The name "zeta" was new, created by the Greeks, possibly inspired by other Greek letters like eta (η) and theta (θ).

Etruscan and Latin Z

The Etruscans, who lived in ancient Italy, also used a form of Z. Later, in Old Latin, the sound that Z made changed. Because of this, the letter Z was removed from the Latin alphabet by a Roman official named Appius Claudius Caecus. A new letter, G, was added instead.

However, in the 1st century BC, Z was put back into the Latin alphabet. It was placed at the very end. This happened because Romans needed a way to write down Greek words accurately, especially when they had the "zeta" sound. So, Z was mainly used in words borrowed from Greek. It was one of only two letters (the other being Y) that the Romans took directly from the Greek alphabet.
