Kids Encyclopedia Facts

GMC is a well-known company that makes many kinds of vehicles, especially trucks. It's part of a much bigger company called General Motors. GMC is famous for building strong and reliable trucks, from smaller ones to really big ones that are often called "Professional Grade" because they are built for tough jobs.

What is GMC?

GMC stands for "General Motors Truck Company." For a long time, GMC was part of the General Motors Diesel Division. This part of the company didn't just make trucks. It also built buses, motorhomes (like RVs for camping), and even special vehicles for the military. Today, GMC focuses mainly on trucks, SUVs, and crossovers.

How GMC Started

The story of GMC began in 1901. A person named Max Grabowsky started a company called the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company. This company built some of the very first trucks. In 1909, General Motors bought Grabowsky's company. This was an important step in creating the GMC brand we know today.

GMC Vehicles Today

GMC is always looking for new ways to make vehicles. In 1989, for example, GMC started selling a small SUV called the Suzuki Sidekick in Canada. They called it the GMC Tracker. Later, in 2006, GMC announced it would start making a new type of vehicle. These were called "unibody crossovers." A crossover is a vehicle that mixes features from both cars and SUVs. The first GMC crossover was the GMC Acadia. It took the place of older models like the Safari minivan and the Envoy XL SUV.
