The Gaari people were a group of Indigenous Australians. They lived on a small island called Grant Island. This island is in the Arafura Sea, off the coast of Australia's Northern Territory.
Their Traditional Land
The Gaari people's traditional land covered about 20 square miles. This area included Grant Island itself and the reefs around it. Grant Island is close to the Goulburn Islands. It is also about 10 miles north of Cape Cockburn. The Gaari's own name for Grant Island was Wuru:ldja.
The Gaari Language
The language spoken by the Gaari people was called Gaari. Experts believe it was very similar to another language known as Mawng. This suggests the two groups might have been closely connected.
Who Were the Gaari?
A famous researcher named Norman Tindale listed the Gaari as a separate tribe. However, he also thought they might have been a smaller group, or a horde, of the Mawng people. This means they could have been a part of the larger Mawng community.
