Gabriel Pereira de Castro was born in a city called Braga, Portugal, on February 7, 1571. He became a priest there. Later, he studied law at the University of Coimbra. This university is one of the oldest in Portugal. He passed away in Lisbon on October 18, 1632.
His Famous Poem
Gabriel Pereira de Castro wrote several books about law. However, he is most famous for his epic poem. An epic poem is a very long story poem, often about heroes or important events. His poem is called Ulisseia ou Lisboa Edificada. This means Ulisseia or Lisbon Built.
The poem was published in 1636, after his death. It has ten parts, called "books." It is written in a special rhyming style called ottava rima. This style was popular for epic poems during the Renaissance. The poem was inspired by The Lusiads, another famous Portuguese epic by Luís Vaz de Camões.
Ulisseia ou Lisboa Edificada tells the story of how the ancient hero Ulysses (also known as Odysseus) supposedly founded the city of Lisbon.
