About the Gabriel River
The Gabriel River is about 13.2 kilometers (8.2 miles) long. It starts as a mountain stream in the area of Saint-Paul-de-Montminy. The river's source is quite high up, at about 540 meters (1,772 feet) above sea level.
Where the River Flows
As the Gabriel River flows, it eventually reaches the Pin River. This happens in the area of Saint-Philémon. At this point, the river is about 357 meters (1,171 feet) above sea level.
The Pin River then flows into the South River. The South River continues its journey northeast. Finally, its waters join the vast St. Lawrence River. This means the Gabriel River is part of a larger system that connects to one of Canada's most important waterways.
Other Streams Joining the Gabriel River
The Gabriel River has a few smaller streams that flow into it. These are called tributaries.
- On its left side (if you're looking downstream), a stream called Ruisseau à Clément joins it.
- On its right side, the Rivière du Nord (North River) flows into the Gabriel River.
Naming of the River
The name "Rivière Gabriel" was officially recognized on December 5, 1968. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec. This commission is in charge of naming places in Quebec.
