Gale Owen-Crocker (born 16 January 1947) is a very respected retired professor. She used to teach about Anglo-Saxon culture at the University of Manchester in England. She also led a special center there that studied Anglo-Saxon times. She is now a professor emerita, which means she is a retired professor who keeps her title.

Gale Owen-Crocker's Early Life and School

Gale Redfern Owen grew up in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. She went to Newcastle University. In 1968, she earned a top degree in English. Later, in 1976, she got her PhD. Her special research for her PhD was about Anglo-Saxon dress, which is the clothing people wore long ago.

Gale Owen-Crocker's Career and Work

After finishing her studies, Gale Owen-Crocker started teaching. She taught at her old school and at Newcastle University. Then, she moved to the University of Manchester. She taught there until she retired in 2015. She became Gale Owen-Crocker when she married Richard Crocker in 1981.

Writing and Editing Books

Professor Owen-Crocker helped start a journal called Medieval Clothing and Textiles. She was a co-editor for many years. She also led the editing for a big book. This book was called Encyclopaedia of Medieval Dress and Textiles of the British Isles c. 450-1450. It was published by Brill in 2012.

She has written six of her own books. One of these books is a collection of her papers about the famous Bayeux Tapestry. She has also helped edit eighteen other books. Plus, she has written over 150 articles. These writings are all about Anglo-Saxon culture and medieval clothing.

Honors and Speaking

Professor Owen-Crocker is known for her great knowledge. She also helps other scholars a lot. Because of her work, two special books were made to honor her. One book was called Textiles, Text, Intertext: Essays in Honour of Gale R. Owen-Crocker. The other was Making Sense of the Bayeux Tapestry.

She often gives talks all over the world. People invite her to speak at universities. She also talks to the public and to groups who re-enact history. She is known for her lively and smart way of presenting information.
