Leslie Galen Young (born October 16, 1975 – died June 5, 2021) was an American professional basketball player. He played basketball in college for the Charlotte 49ers. He was even named first-team All-Conference USA in 1999. Galen played professionally for 13 years in the United States and other countries. He won two major championships: one in 2007 with the Yakima Sun Kings in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) and another in 2010 with the Perth Wildcats in Australia's National Basketball League (NBL).

Galen Young's College Journey
Galen Young went to Hillcrest High School in Memphis, Tennessee. After high school, he played basketball at Northwest Mississippi Community College from 1994 to 1996. In his second year there, he was named the team's Most Valuable Player. He was also chosen for the All-State team twice. He earned the title of NJCAA All-American, which is a big honor for junior college players.
In 1997, he moved to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to play for the 49ers. By 1999, he was a top player. He was named first-team All-Conference USA. He also won the MVP award for the Conference USA tournament. As a senior, he scored about 14.7 points and grabbed 7.2 rebounds per game. He finished his college career as one of the best players in his school's history for scoring, blocked shots, and rebounds.
Playing Professional Basketball
Galen Young was chosen by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1999 NBA draft. He was the 48th player picked overall. After trying out with the Bucks, he started his professional career in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). He played for the Grand Rapids Hoops and was named to the CBA All-Rookie Team.
Playing Around the World
For the 2000–01 season, Galen played basketball in Japan for the Bosch Blue Winds. He later played in the NBA Development League for the North Charleston Lowgators. He also had a short time playing in Venezuela.
He returned to the CBA for the 2002–03 season, playing for the Gary Steelheads. He continued with the Steelheads for another season. During this time, he also played in the Philippines for the Alaska Aces. He later played in Italy and Spain.
Winning Championships
In the 2006–07 season, Galen helped the Yakima Sun Kings win the CBA championship. He was also named the CBA Most Valuable Player that year. After the CBA season, he played in the Philippines again for the San Miguel Beermen. He helped them improve their season a lot.
For the 2007–08 season, Galen moved to Australia. He played for the Townsville Crocodiles in the NBL. He averaged 11.3 points and 9.4 rebounds per game.
He played his fifth season in the CBA in 2008–09 for the East Kentucky Miners. He then had another short time playing for the Alaska Aces in the Philippines.
In 2009, Galen returned to Australia and joined the Perth Wildcats. He helped the Wildcats win the NBL championship in the 2009–10 season.
In 2010, he played 11 games for the BC Titans in the International Basketball League.
Player-Coach and Final Seasons
For the 2010–11 season, Galen Young took on a new role. He was a player-coach for the East Kentucky Energy in the ABA. He led his team to the ABA Final Four. He was also chosen as one of the East All-Star Team Coaches for the 2011 ABA All-Star game.
In 2011, Galen moved to New Zealand to play for the Hawke's Bay Hawks. He helped the Hawks reach the final game of the 2011 season. He played his final professional season with the Hawks in 2012. He averaged 11.5 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 3.7 assists in 17 games.
After Playing: Coaching Career
After his playing career, Galen Young became a basketball coach. In 2016, he became an assistant coach for the Lane College men's basketball team. He worked with the Dragons for four seasons. Then, for the 2020–21 season, he was an assistant coach for the Rockhurst University men's basketball team.
Personal Life
Galen Young was a father to two twin sons, Grayson and Ellis.
Death
Galen Young passed away on June 5, 2021, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was 45 years old. His death was caused by a car crashing into his mother's house where he was at the time.
