Mr. Hibbs was an important person. He was the second mayor of St. Petersburg, Florida. He also started the commercial fishing industry in that city.

Boy Scout Camps

Further upstream along Gales Creek, there have been other camps for youth. One was Camp E-Ma-Henwu. This camp was run by the Eckerd Youth Alternatives program. The land for this camp was leased from the East Carolina Council, Boy Scouts of America. Today, the East Carolina Council, BSA, operates Camp Sam Hatcher on the same property. This camp provides many activities for Boy Scouts.

Local Agriculture: Bogue Sound Watermelons

The Gales Creek area is known for a special type of fruit. It's part of the state-defined growing region for Bogue Sound Watermelons. This is an effort to promote a traditional farm product from the area. The idea is similar to how Vidalia Onions became famous. Farmers hope to make Bogue Sound Watermelons well-known too.
