Galina Nikolaevna Tyurina (born July 19, 1938 – died July 21, 1970) was a brilliant Soviet mathematician. She was an expert in a field of math called algebraic geometry. Even though she died young, she wrote many important papers. Her work helped us understand complex shapes and structures in mathematics.
Galina was the only woman among a group of "exceptionally brilliant" Soviet mathematicians. These mathematicians became very active in the 1960s. They quickly became leaders in Soviet mathematics.
Becoming a Mathematician
Galina Tyurina studied at Moscow State University. She graduated in 1960. She then continued her studies and earned her Ph.D. in 1963. Her professor, Igor Shafarevich, guided her research.
Life Outside Math
Galina Tyurina was known for being quiet and modest. But she was also tough and confident. Besides her amazing math skills, she loved the outdoors. She was a skilled adventurer. She often led trips for hiking, climbing, skiing, and kayaking in the wild parts of Russia.
Sadly, she died in a kayaking accident. This happened in the Polar Urals just two days after her 32nd birthday.
Galina's younger brother, Andrej Nikolaevich Tyurin, also became a mathematician. He also studied with Professor Shafarevich.
