The bank itself started much earlier, in 1829. It was first called National Bank. Later, its name changed to Gallatin Bank. This was to honor the family of Albert Gallatin, a very important person in American history.

The land for the building was bought for $12,000. The architects who designed this impressive building were Cady, Berg & See.

A well-known businessman named John Jacob Astor helped start the bank. He also convinced Albert Gallatin to be the bank's very first president.

History of the Gallatin Bank Building

The Gallatin Bank Building opened its doors in 1887. It was built after the bank's president, James Gallatin, stepped down in 1868. The new president was Frederick Tappen.

This grand building stood for 42 years. It was home to many important financial companies. The Gallatin Bank Building was one of the most respected buildings on Wall Street. It was a key part of the Financial District from the late 1800s to the early 1900s.

However, the building was eventually torn down. This happened to make space for a new skyscraper. The new building was called 40 Wall Street. The Bank of Manhattan Company completed it in late 1929. When it was finished, 40 Wall Street was the tallest office building in the world!
