About Gallery Oldham
Building Design and History
Gallery Oldham was first finished in February 2002. It was designed by architects named Pringle Richards Sharratt. This special building brings together local museum and art gallery services. It's a place where you can explore both art and history collections.
In April 2006, the building got even bigger! A new part was added, which included the Oldham Library and Lifelong Learning Centre. This expansion cost about £13 million. Now, the building has library services and places for learning, making it a great spot for everyone.
What You Can See and Do
Gallery Oldham has many different things to show you. It features art, social history, and natural history collections from Oldham. You can also see special touring exhibits from other places. Sometimes, they even show brand-new art or art made with local communities.
The gallery holds the main collection for Oldham and the wider Metropolitan Borough of Oldham. This means it has many important items that tell the story of the area.
Exhibits and Collections
Permanent and Temporary Displays

One of the main displays is called Oldham Stories. This is a permanent exhibit that shows objects and specimens from all the different collections. It's a great way to learn about Oldham's past and its natural world.
Besides the permanent display, Gallery Oldham also has two galleries for temporary exhibitions. These shows change often, so there's always something new to see! The gallery is known for having one of the busiest exhibition schedules in its region. These exhibitions often mix traveling shows with pieces from the gallery's own collections. You can find art, items from social history, and natural history displays.
Featured Artists and Artworks
Gallery Oldham proudly displays works by artists from the local area. These include famous names like Helen Bradley, William Stott, and Alan Rankle.
The gallery's collections also feature art by well-known British artists. You might see paintings by L. S. Lowry, John William Waterhouse, and Bridget Riley. In recent years, the gallery has also started collecting studio pottery. This means you can see beautiful ceramic artworks made by modern artists.
