A.S.D. Città di Gallipoli is a football club from Gallipoli, a town in Italy. This club plays Italian football and has a rich history.

Club History

How Gallipoli Football Started

The club started in 1999 as Associazione Calcio Gallipoli. It was created to represent the town of Gallipoli. The team quickly became successful in Italian football. They were promoted from a league called Eccellenza Apulia in the 2003–04 season.

After being promoted to Serie D in their first season, the club changed its name. In 2005, they became Gallipoli Calcio. They then won a third promotion in a row to Serie C1. This meant they played in Italy's third-highest league in the 2006–07 season. They finished in the middle of the league table that year.

A famous former player, Dario Bonetti, became the new coach for the 2007–08 season. He was later let go, even though the team was playing well. The club ended that season in ninth place. Another well-known player, Giuseppe Giannini, became the coach for the 2008–09 season. Under him, the team had a great season! They won the league and were promoted to Serie B for the first time ever.

Challenges and Changes

In July 2009, the club faced some big problems. The club's president announced that the team was for sale for free. Also, their home stadium, Stadio Antonio Bianco, was not good enough for Serie B games. This meant they had to play their home games in Lecce. These issues made it hard for them to get ready for their first Serie B season.

The club even had to play a Coppa Italia match with their under-19 team. They lost badly, 6–0. Just two weeks before the league started, only four main players were left. There was no training camp and no coach.

On August 11, 2009, a company called "D'Odorico Group" took over the club. This ended the worries about the club's future. The new owner kept Giannini as coach. Even though they were not expected to do well, Gallipoli earned 28 points by the middle of the season. They were in eleventh place. However, things got worse in the second half of the season.

Coach Giannini left on March 22, 2010, because the players were not getting paid. After a short time with a youth coach, Ezio Rossi became the new coach. But this change did not help. Gallipoli was sent back down to the third league on May 16, 2010. The club had serious money problems. In July 2010, a court in Lecce declared the club bankrupt.

New Beginnings

A new club, A.S.D. Gallipoli Football 1909, was started on July 13, 2010. Their goal was to join Promozione, which is a lower amateur league in Italy. In their first season (2010–2011), Gallipoli finished in third place. They lost in the play-offs to get promoted to Eccellenza Apulia. They finished third again in their group the next season and lost the play-offs once more. However, the club was later allowed to join Eccellenza Apulia.

Gallipoli finished seventh in the 2012–13 season. Finally, in the 2013–14 season, Gallipoli won the Eccellenza Apulia league. This meant they were promoted to Group H of Serie D. After two seasons in Serie D and many changes in ownership, the team went back down to Eccellenza Apulia in 2015–16. They stayed there for the next seven seasons.

ASD Città di Gallipoli Emerges

In the 2022–23 Eccellenza Apulia season, two teams from Gallipoli played in the same league for the first time. These were Gallipoli Football 1909 and a new team called ASD Città di Gallipoli. The new team had been promoted after winning the Promozione league the season before.

At the end of the 2022–23 season, Gallipoli Football 1909 moved its team to another town. This made ASD Città di Gallipoli the only team representing the city of Gallipoli in the fifth level of Italian football. Meanwhile, ASD Città di Gallipoli won their group and the national play-offs. This earned them a promotion to Serie D.
