Playing for Clubs
Giuseppe Giannini was born in Rome, Italy. He started playing football as a young boy for a local club called Almas Roma. Many big Italian clubs noticed his talent early on. He chose to join Roma, even though other famous clubs like S.S. Lazio and A.C. Milan wanted him.
His Time at Roma
Giannini made his first professional appearance in Italy's top league, Serie A, on January 31, 1982. He played over 400 games for Roma during his fifteen years there. He became the captain of the team. With Roma, he won the Serie A title once in the 1982–83 season. He also won the Coppa Italia (Italian Cup) three times. He played in the final of the UEFA Cup in the 1990–91 season.
Moving to Other Teams
In 1996, Giannini left Roma to play for Sturm Graz in Austria. He only stayed there for half a season because he missed Italy. Before he stopped playing in 1999, he also played for Napoli and Lecce for short periods.
Playing for Italy
Giuseppe Giannini also played for the Italian national team.
Under-21 Team Success
He played for the Italy under-21 team and reached the final of the 1986 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. He even scored a goal in the first game of the final. However, Italy lost the final to Spain after a penalty shootout.
Senior National Team
Giannini played 47 games for the senior Italian national team between 1986 and 1991. He scored 6 goals for his country. His first game for Italy was in December 1986 against Malta. He was 22 years old then.
He represented Italy in the 1988 European Football Championship and the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy. In both tournaments, Italy reached the semi-finals. At the 1990 World Cup, Italy won a bronze medal for finishing third. Giannini scored a goal in Italy's 1–0 win against the United States. He also helped set up goals for his teammates in other matches. He was chosen as part of the best team of the tournament at Euro 1988. His last game for Italy was in October 1991.
How He Played
Giuseppe Giannini was known for his elegant and creative style of play. People called him "Il Principe" (The Prince) because of this. He was a "fantasista," which means a creative player with great skill and vision.
He usually played as a central midfielder. He could control the game from the middle of the field. He was also good at playing closer to the attack, creating chances for others or making runs to score goals himself. Giannini was considered one of Italy's best midfielders of his time. He was also a hard-working player with good stamina and understanding of the game. He could shoot accurately with both feet and had a good eye for scoring goals. His leadership skills were also very important, especially when he was Roma's captain.
Managerial Career
After retiring as a player, Giannini became a football manager.

Later Coaching Positions
In June 2010, he signed a contract to coach Verona. His goal was to help them get promoted. In October 2011, he was appointed head coach of Serie B club Grosseto. He left this role in December, even after some good wins, because of disagreements with the club's chairman.
