Galloway House is a grand old country house located in Sorbie, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. It's considered a very important building, known as a Category A listed building, which means it's protected because of its special history and architecture.

History of Galloway House

Galloway House is right next to the small village of Garlieston, overlooking Wigtown Bay. It was first started in 1740.

Building the House

The house was built for a nobleman named Lord Garlies, who later became the sixth Earl of Galloway. The main design was created by an architect named John Douglas. Another architect, John Baxter, helped with the building work on site.

Later, in 1841, more parts were added to the house. These new sections were designed by William Burn, an architect from Edinburgh.

The Garden Wall

Around 1750, or maybe during the Napoleonic Wars, a tall wall was built around the garden. This interesting fact is that French prisoners of war helped to build this wall!

Changes in Ownership

The Earls of Galloway owned the house and its large estate for a very long time, until 1908. At that point, they had to sell it.

The new owner was Sir Malcolm McEacharn. He spent time improving and developing the beautiful gardens around the house.

In 1930, Galloway House was sold again. This time, it was bought by Lady Forteviot, whose family was famous for Dewar's Whisky.

Galloway House During Wartime

Lady Forteviot passed away in 1940. During the Second World War, the house was used as a hospital. It provided care for soldiers who were injured during the war.

Lady Forteviot's step-grandson, Edward Strutt, continued to work on the gardens. But in 1947, the house was sold once more.

From School to Private Home

For many years, from 1947 until 1976, Galloway House was a boarding school. Imagine going to school in such a grand old house!

After being a school, the house was sold back to private owners. First, an American bought it, and then an Australian. In 2011, Galloway House was put up for sale again. It has been sold several times since then.
