Garci Lasso de la Vega I was an important Spanish noble who lived a long time ago. People also called him "el Viejo," which means "the Old One." He worked for King Alfonso XI of Castile and helped him rule the kingdom.

Garci Lasso de la Vega I held many big jobs for the king. He was the chancellor, like a top advisor. He was also an adelantado, a special officer who governed a region for the king. Later, he became the king's chief justice, making sure laws were followed. He owned a lot of land and towns across Castile.

In 1328, Garci Lasso de la Vega I went to Soria. He wanted to find friends to help the king. The king was having trouble with a powerful prince named Don Juan Manuel. This prince was causing problems in the king's lands. Sadly, in Soria, some nobles attacked Garci Lasso de la Vega I. He tried to find safety in a church, but he was killed. King Alfonso XI made sure that everyone who was involved in his death was punished.

Who Was Garci Lasso de la Vega?

Some historians, like Luis de Salazar y Castro, think the "de la Vega" family came from a person named Diego Gómez. He was the son of a count and countess. Another historian, Carlos Estepa Díez, believes there were other people named "de la Vega" at the same time. He thinks we don't have enough proof that they all came from the same family, even if they sometimes married each other.

The name "Lasso" was added later. It probably came from an old Spanish word meaning "tired." The first person to use "Lasso de la Vega" was Pedro Lasso de la Vega. He became an admiral for King Alfonso X of Castile in 1278.
