Garci Lasso de la Vega II, also known as “El Joven” (which means "The Young"), was an important person in the history of Castile in the 1300s. He was the son of Garci Lasso de la Vega "El Viejo" and his first wife, Juana de Castañeda.

Garci Lasso de la Vega II was a brave military leader. He led Castilian soldiers against Navarra in the Battle of Río Salado in 1334. He showed great courage in this battle. Because of his bravery, he was given an important job at the court of Fadrique Alfonso de Castilla. Fadrique was a master of the Order of Santiago and the son of King Alfonso XI of Castile.

Later, Garci Lasso de la Vega II became an "Adelantado" of Castile. An Adelantado was a high royal officer who governed a region. He got this position thanks to Juan Núñez III de Lara, who was a powerful noble. After Juan Núñez de Lara died, Garci Lasso de la Vega II went to Burgos to find safety. He was worried about Juan Alfonso de Alburquerque, another powerful figure. Sadly, King Peter the Cruel and his men captured him in Burgos. Garci Lasso de la Vega II died there in 1351. The historian Pero López de Ayala wrote about this event in his chronicles.

What Garci Lasso Inherited

When his father died in 1338, Garci Lasso de la Vega II received many lands. These lands were spread across the Kingdom of Castile.

He inherited estates in Asturias de Santillana, including areas in Udías and Cabuérniga. He also received properties in Carmona, Santibáñez de Carrejo, and Bárcena de Puente de San Miguel. Other lands included Valles-Helgueras, tenements in Viérnoles, and shared lands in Arenas. The family estates of Mercadal and Mijares also became his.

He also received lands that the King had given to his father. These included the family estates of Cudón and the castle of Guardo. The castle came with its main tower and nearby towns. However, the town of Torremormojón went to Urraca Rodríguez de Rojas. To make up for this, Garci Lasso de la Vega II received the castle of Lucio.

His Marriages and Children

Garci Lasso de la Vega II was married two times.

His first wife was Urraca Rodríguez de Rojas. She was the daughter of Juan Rodríguez de Rojas. They did not have any children together.

His second marriage was to Leonor González de Cornado. Her family name later changed to Coronado. Leonor was the daughter of Gonzalo Rodríguez de Cornado and Elvira Arias. After Garci Lasso de la Vega II died, Leonor was a widow. Records from the Convent of Santa Clara in Astudillo, Palencia, show her selling a silver cross. This cross had precious stones and was sold for 10,000 maravedíes to María de Padilla.

Garci Lasso de la Vega II and Leonor had three children:

  • Garci Lasso Ruiz de la Vega (born around 1340, died April 2, 1367).
  • Gonzalo Ruiz de la Vega
  • Sancho Lasso de la Vega

His Will

Garci Lasso de la Vega II made his will on October 3, 1349. This was before the siege of Gibraltar. In his will, he asked to be buried at the Convent of Santa Clara in Castrojeriz. He also mentioned both of his wives.

He left some properties to his brother-in-law, Diego Rodríguez de Rojas. He also mentioned his mother-in-law, Sancha. Sancha was the wife of Juan Rodríguez de Rojas, who was the father of his first wife.

His second wife, Leonor, also made her will on April 12, 1378. She asked to be buried in the same convent as her husband. In her will, she mentioned her children, Gonzalo and Sancho, and a grandson named Gonzalo.
