Discovering the Garda Museum
This museum opened its doors in 2017. It was designed by Dara Lynne Lenehan. The museum tells the story of how law and order have been kept in the Republic of Ireland over many centuries. It covers a long period of history, from medieval times right up to today.
Who Opened the Museum?
The museum was officially opened in December 2016 by the Garda Commissioner at the time, Nóirín O'Sullivan. However, due to some legal issues, the public couldn't visit right away. It finally opened its doors to everyone in August 2017. Before this new museum, there was an older one located in the Record Tower.
What Can You Learn About Policing?
The Garda Museum shows how policing has changed throughout history. You can learn about different groups who kept the peace.
- Medieval Watchmen: These were some of the earliest people who looked after safety in towns.
- Baronial and County Constabulary: These were police forces from older times, before modern policing.
- Dublin Metropolitan Police (DMP): This was the police force for the city of Dublin.
- Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC): This was a police force that operated across most of Ireland.
- Garda Síochána: This is Ireland's national police service today. It was first known as the Civic Guard.
Other Police Museums
- There was also a museum called the Garda College Museum and Visitor Centre. It was open from 2002 to 2020. This museum was located at the Garda Síochána College in Templemore.
