Garden Village: A Community's History

The Early Days: From Liberty to Pikeville

The story of Garden Village actually began a long time ago, in 1822. When Pike County was first created, this spot was chosen to be the county's main town. It was named Liberty. The idea was for Liberty to become the "county seat," which is like the capital city for a county. It's where the local government offices are located.

However, the people living nearby didn't really like the location of Liberty. So, just one year later, in 1823, a different place was chosen. This new spot was named Pike, which is known today as Pikeville. Pike became the new county seat instead of Liberty.

How Garden Village Got Its Name

Many years later, in 1945, a local landowner named William Justice decided to establish a new community right on the old site of Liberty. He named this new place Garden Village. He got the idea for the name from a place he had visited before, called Garden City, New York.

Today, Garden Village is still a quiet community. It does not have its own separate post office.
