The Garland Grange Hall is a special old building in Garland, Maine. It was built in 1891 and is known as a Grange hall. This building is one of the best examples of 19th-century Grange halls in Maine. It mixes two cool old building styles: Greek Revival and Italianate. Since it was built, the hall has been a busy place for the community to meet and have fun. Because of its history and unique look, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

What Does the Garland Grange Hall Look Like?

The Garland Grange Hall is on Oliver Hill Road in Garland. It's a two-and-a-half-story building made of wood. It has a roof that slopes down on two sides, facing the front. The outside walls are covered with clapboard, which are long, thin boards. The building sits on a strong foundation made of granite stone.

Architectural Style and Details

The corners of the building have special flat columns called pilasters. These show the Greek Revival style. At the top of these columns, you can see paired brackets. These brackets support a wide overhang of the roof and are typical of the Italianate style.

The front of the building faces east and looks the same on both sides. The main door is in the middle and has a small roof over it, also with Italianate brackets. Most windows have six small panes of glass on the top and six on the bottom. The window in the pointed part of the roof is different. It's a fixed window with a rounded top. Below the roof's edge, there's a band of pretty flower-shaped decorations called rosettes.

Inside, the building still has its original wooden walls and floors. The first floor has a dining hall and a kitchen. Upstairs, there's a large room called an auditorium. Even today, the original tables and chairs from the 1800s are still used!

History of the Garland Grange Hall

The Grange is a group also known as the Patrons of Husbandry. It started in Maine in 1873. The Garland chapter of the Grange began just one year later, in 1874. Members of this group worked together to build this hall in 1891.

This building is one of the oldest Grange halls in Maine that shows off such interesting architecture. It's a great example of how Maine buildings in the 1800s sometimes kept older styles even after they became less popular in other places. The Garland Grange Hall has been a central spot for community events and gatherings for over a century.
