A Look Back: Garland's History
Garland started as a settlement in 1802. It officially became a town in 1811. The town was named after its very first settler, Joseph Garland. He moved there from a place called Salisbury, New Hampshire.
Before it was called Garland, the land was given by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to Williams College. The college then sold the land to different owners in 1798. One of these owners was Levi Lincoln, so the area was first known as "Lincoln."
By the year 1859, Garland had grown quite a bit. Its population reached 1,247 people.
