But in 2012, a new cinema called Mareel opened, which is built just for films.
History of the Garrison Theatre
The Garrison Theatre first opened its doors in 1903. It was not a theatre at first. It was used as a drill hall and a gymnasium. Soldiers would train there during the First World War. It was also the main office for a group of soldiers called the 7th Volunteer Battalion Gordon Highlanders.
Later, during the Second World War, the building changed. In 1942, a group called ENSA turned it into a theatre. Its new job was to entertain the troops. This helped keep up their spirits during the war.
After the wars, in the 1950s and 1960s, the theatre was owned by the Zetland County Council. They decided to fix up the theatre in 1989. The Islesburgh Drama Group and an Entertainments Committee helped plan the shows. Later, the theatre was looked after by the Islesburgh Trust. Finally, in April 2007, Shetland Arts took over managing the Garrison Theatre.
Inside the Theatre
The stage at the Garrison Theatre is about 6.7 meters (22 feet) wide. It is also about 5.5 meters (18 feet) deep. Above the stage, there are four bars for lights. There is also one lighting bar in the main seating area, plus side lights.
When you enter the theatre, you will find a small stall. Here you can buy snacks and drinks. There is also a box office where you can get your tickets. Backstage, there are two large dressing rooms for performers. There are also three toilets and two showers for them to use.
