Garske, North Dakota facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Garske is a small place in North Dakota, United States. It's known as an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Instead, it's part of a larger area called Ramsey County.

Discovering Garske's Past

Long ago, in 1883, a special group of people started a new life near where Garske is today. This was a Jewish homesteading community, meaning families moved there to build farms and homes on land given by the government. They called their settlement the Garske Colony. These brave pioneers worked hard to create a new home in North Dakota. The colony thrived for a while but eventually ended around 1925.

The Historic Sons of Jacob Cemetery

Even though the Garske Colony is no longer active, an important part of its history remains: the Sons of Jacob Cemetery. This cemetery was where the people of the colony buried their loved ones. It's a very important historical site. In June 2017, it was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's recognized as a place that is important to the history of the United States. The cemetery is located about 8 miles (13 kilometers) away from the modern-day Garske area.
