Garth Richard Nix (born 19 July 1963) is a well-known Australian writer. He is famous for his exciting fantasy novels, especially those for children and young adults. Some of his most popular book series include Old Kingdom, Seventh Tower, and Keys to the Kingdom. People often ask if "Garth Nix" is a made-up name because it sounds so perfect for a fantasy author. But he always says it's his real name!

Early Life and Education
Garth Nix was born in Melbourne, Australia, on July 19, 1963. He grew up in Canberra, the capital city of Australia. He went to Turner Primary School, Lyneham High School, and Dickson College. While he was at Dickson College, Garth joined the Australian Army Reserve. After working for the Australian government for a while, he traveled around Europe. He returned to Australia in 1983. Then, he studied professional writing at the University of Canberra.
Becoming a Writer
After finishing college, Garth Nix worked in a bookshop in Canberra. In 1987, he moved to Sydney. There, he started working in the publishing world. He began as a sales representative and publicist. Later, he became a senior editor at a big publishing company called HarperCollins.
In 1993, he traveled again, visiting places in Asia, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. After his travels, he started his own company. From 1999 to 2002, he worked as a literary agent. This means he helped authors find publishers for their books. Finally, in 2002, he became a full-time author. This allowed him to focus completely on writing his amazing fantasy stories.
Other Creative Works
Besides his fantasy novels, Garth Nix has also written for role-playing games. These include popular games like Dungeons & Dragons and Traveller. His writings for these games have appeared in magazines such as White Dwarf and Multiverse.
Awards and Family Life
Garth Nix was honored with the Medal of the Order of Australia in the 2025 King's Birthday Honours. This is a special award given to Australians for their achievements.
Today, Garth Nix lives in Sydney with his wife, Anna McFarlane. Anna is also involved in publishing. They have two sons named Thomas and Edward.
